Meyer

The Meyer design is normally associated with two steam bogies and the cylinders in the middle. In the Kitson Meyer variant the cylinders are at any end of the steam bogie... The locomotive that I originally went for was a NZ Price type AR -which is more Kitson Meyer than classic Meyer.

Due to the only photographs that I could find at the time they gave me a very strangely dimensioned loco. I was later to find out that my initial calculations -were very nearly right....

This image is from Mr John Garner of NZ whose site is a gold mine!

There being no 'believable' measurements for the body of the locomotive I decided to hunt around for a suitable 'top half' to graft to my Meyer 'bottom half'. I found what I thought was a winner in the Price made Wf tank loco.

This time I fiddled the dimensions to get it to be an exact fit for two 4.5Ah lead acid batteries, so it is a little out -but only by a few millimetres!!!

Here you can see the loco with its initial power bogies -they are the IP ENG de luxe, (no I do not own shares in this company!) Later on when I was building the chassis for the ACE 6000G I decided to have a go at some chassis for this loco. I had seen a chain drive system fitted to a Finnish loco and although it looked strange -I liked it.

I have since found out that a similar system was fitted to an Australian loco by Harman -but theirs were all sealed in oil baths and looked like huge banjo cases stuck to the side of the chassis.
